The highlight event, broadcasted live on DSTV, transformed the streets of Calabar into a spectacle transcending borders, reaffirming its status as Africa’s premier street carnival.
Cross River’s Commissioner for Information, Erasmus Ekpang, provided insights into the carnival’s success, revealing that hotels had been fully booked since Tuesday, underscoring the heightened anticipation surrounding the cultural extravaganza.
In an interview, Ekpang expressed the state’s excitement, noting the challenges faced by visitors without prior hotel reservations, highlighting the overwhelming demand for accommodation.
Acknowledging the pivotal role of sponsors in the carnival’s success, Ekpang emphasized the collaborative efforts of banks and DSTV in partnership with the state government, which significantly contributed to the event’s prominence and scale.
This year’s edition introduces new dimensions, including expansion into the Northern and Central senatorial districts of the state, fostering inclusivity and community engagement. The carnival has already traversed Ogoja in the North and Ikom in the Central, featuring highlights such as the reintroduction of the children’s segment.
Preparations for the carnival have seen significant transformations in Calabar, with major roundabouts and roads undergoing rehabilitation.
As the month-long carnival unfolds, reports indicate widespread participation, with 15 states and two African countries joining Tuesday’s cultural events.
